THE EIGHTH DETECTIVE, by Alex Pavesi

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

Years ago, mathematics professor Grant McAllister wrote seven short crime novels using mathematics rules he proclaimed were the secrets to the perfect mystery.  Now living in near isolation, he is visited by Julia Hart, a book editor who wants to publish his seven stories in one volume.  There are seven complete novellas, but it is the eighth one that changes everything. ----- One of the most original mysteries I've read in a long time.  The separate stories evoke the 1930s crime story style, and each is satisfyingly complete giving the book a nice rhythm.  The analyses that follows each were interesting to a point, though a couple of them could have used a bit of editing.  The ending of what is essentially a two character novel seemed pre-ordained, but the trip to get there was a whole lot of fun.
