Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
Hannah and her older sister spent childhood summers with their aunt and uncle at Brackenhill Castle. Those idyllic summers ended when Hannah's sister disappeared one day. Now, Hannah's aunt has died in a car accident, and an adult Hannah has returned with her fiance to care for her dying uncle. Haunting memories of that long ago summer pull Hannah into Brackenhill's mysteries, and with each returning memory, Hannah finds herself closer and closer to a truth she may not want. ----- Fast moving and gripping, this modern gothic story is replete with secrets that expose how fragile childhood memories can be. Hannah, both as a child and as an adult, is especially well drawn. Other characters are solid and believable, adding tension while fitting neatly into the unfolding drama. The final reveal is like a thunder clap, an unexpected crash that stops all forward motion and takes your breath away.
