THE SEARCHER, by Tana French

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 1/2 stars

Cal Hooper has left Chicago police work behind to retire to a quiet village in Ireland.  When a local teenager goes missing, his younger sibling approaches Cal for help that isn't forthcoming from the local constabulary.  As a reluctant investigator, Cal finds his hard won village acceptance is a mirage, and his quiet refuge is rife with secrets. ----- This is a book filled with interesting and charming characters living in an atmospheric world so perfect it is almost painful when Ms. French takes us behind the pretty facade to reveal that quaint isn't all it's cracked up to be.  The pace fits the Irish countryside setting where protecting the status quo is  all important, but only if done quietly and without fuss, no questions please.
