MEXICAN GOTHIC, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Horror - 4 1/2 stars

Noemi receives a strange and frantic letter from her cousin, recently married and living in a mysterious house in the Mexican countryside, that sends her to her cousin's side to see if she can help.  She is met with a decaying mansion overseen by an inhospitable family and an ailing patriarch.  Not long after her awkward reception, Noemi begins to experience the same hallucinatory symptoms her cousin hinted at in her letter.  Permitted only limited access to this cousin she has come to see, Noemi finds a friend in the youngest son who harbors a deep fascination for mushrooms and their wide variety of side effects. ----- Creepy caretakers, walls that pulse with mold, flickering golden lights, whispery voices, you'll find it all in this atmospheric horror tale.  All the classic gothic characters are here, though good writing keeps them from being completely trite.  Good pacing moves the story to the inevitable, and scarily spectacular climax.  This is unabashed, classic horror writing where secrets revealed will raise the stakes for everyone, and survival is in no way guaranteed.
