Mystery/Thriller -- 3 1/2 stars
When FBI agent Lucy Thorne is called to her field office, she has no idea she will be hearing a murder confession. Once teenager Eliza Cook has confessed, she refuses to say anything more. The details all match, but without a motive, Lucy wants more information. Unable to get Eliza to talk, Lucy travels to Knox Hollow, a town dominated by a religious sect that doesn't sit well with the sheriff, or with FBI Special Agent Thorne. ----- Stock characters on one side and a somewhat flat main character, it is the sheriff who proves difficult to pin down, so becoming the one truly interesting inhabitant of this story. That the sect is at the heart of the mystery is obvious, but the "why" of their actions is dropped without much fanfare, a disappointing presentation of what should have been a bombshell.
