Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
Augusta Monet's mother was a detective who was deep into a cold case when she died. Augusta finds her mother's files in a trunk in her grandmother's house that bring back memories she thought she had lost, like the picture of a young ballerina that had fascinated her as a child. Now she is determined to find out what happened to the ballerina girl who disappeared along with a small town wiped from the map after a chemical accident. Her Uncle Rory, now a police officer with the same department where her mother served, offers some revelations about her mother that he hopes will end Augusta's interest in the old case. He's wrong. ----- This is a story revealed layer by layer, each one containing a secret that pulls Augusta further into the past. The villain is pretty obvious from the beginning, but the how and why are meted out in a pace that keeps you turning pages. Augusta's character is a flawed work in progress which makes her all that more interesting. Secondary characters are all well fitted to the story's progress and presented with enough depth to make them flesh and blood witnesses and/or guardians of decades old secrets. A final discovery, held until the last pages, adds a nice final touch.
