THE RED LOTUS, by Chris Bohjalian

Mystery/Thriller - 3 stars

When Austin is treated in the ER for a bullet wound, he and his treating doctor, Alexis, find an instant, mutual attraction.  Six months later, Austin asks Alexis to join him on a bike tour of Vietnam telling her he wants to make a pilgrimage to the locations where his uncle died and his father was wounded during the war.  Wanting to make that part of the journey alone, Austin leaves Alexis at their hotel and sets out solo. His body is found the next day, the victim of an apparent hit and run.  Only after Alexis returns to the U.S. does she begin to realize something about the whole story isn't right. ----- An interesting--and frightening--idea and good characterizations abound.  Unfortunately, this story lacks the emotional and social issue edge usually found in Mr Bohjalian's books.  It's a solid, if average, story that held my interest even if it didn't touch my heart as so many of his books have.
