THE HOLDOUT, by Graham Moore
Mystery/Thriller -- 3 stars
Fifteen year old heiress Jessica Silver has disappeared and is presumed dead though no body has been found. After sexually graphic texts between Bobby Nock, her 25 year-old teacher, and Jessica are found, Bobby is put on trial for her murder. The case seems simple to eleven jurors, but Maya is not convinced. Ten years later, a documentary TV show brings the jurors back to film a show about the trial and their verdict. When one of the other jurors is found dead in Maya's hotel room, Maya finds herself on the other side of the law, and more determined than ever to prove that she was right about Bobby Nock. ----- Plenty of questions and just enough twists to keep the story moving, though the pressure exerted for answers seems half-heartedly applied, especially in the trial portion of the book. After the jurors are reconnected for the documentary, it is revealed that each juror has a secret, but the reveals are presented like a checklist. After the first few, you know that nothing is going to be decided until the eleventh, so the first ten are nothing but filler, some interesting, some not. An average tale that is not helped by its dissatisfying ending.
