THE OBSESSION, by Nora Roberts
Mystery/Thriller -- 3 stars
Naomi saved a young woman's life when she herself was only 12 years old. As an adult with a successful career as a photographer, she just wants to put her family's notoriety behind her. It turns out to be harder than she thinks. ----- I used to read a lot of Nora Roberts books. I think the cookie cutter template of her stories finally killed my interest. A friend suggested The Obsession, so I gave it a try. This book starts off like gangbusters. I couldn't turn pages fast enough until one page turn skidded the story to a near dead halt. I read on a Kindle, and the change in feel is so abrupt that I honestly checked to make sure I hadn't somehow clicked on a link that put me to the middle of a Maeve Binchy book. (Not that I have anything against the late Maeve Binchy.) Signature Nora Roberts just-a-tad-too-clever-to-be-entirely-natural dialogue serves the chapter after chapter of house decorating, blossoming love affair, life in a small town feelgood-ness well; but I welcomed when the story finally began to connect to the beginning, even if it never quite reached the excitement penned in the first pages.
Thanks to fellow book lover T.K. for suggesting it, even if I didn't love it unconditionally.
