THINBLADE, by David A. Wells
Fantasy -- 3 stars
Sovereign of the Seven Isles - Book 1
An evil, thought conquered thousands of years ago, has returned to the Seven Isles. When Alexander's older brother is assassinated, he finds his family's charge to protect an ancient secret has fallen to him, but first he has to find the Thinblade. ----- A slow and repetitious start does not help this first in a seven book series. Fully the first third of the book consists of run-get surrounded-escape, run-get surrounded-escape, over and over and over. I'm one of those readers who can't put a book down, no matter how awful, because I'm afraid it will get better and I'll miss something. In this case, my perseverance paid off to a degree, because once Mr. Wells managed to shed his repetitious beginning, it did get better and more interesting. However, unsophisticated writing, and the lack of any serious character insight gets in the way of this becoming a really great read. Will I read the next book? Maybe, but not right away.
