THE ANCESTOR, by Danielle Trussoni

Mystery/Thriller -- 3 1/2 stars

When Alberta Monte inherits a castle in Italy, it seems like a dream come true, but her family legacy is not for the faint of heart. Her lawyer delivers her to the castle courtyard promising to return in a week.  The isolated castle's caretakers seem to think that's unlikely.  Well, then, surely her husband will come and get her, right?  ----- This story starts off screaming evil-ghost-waiting-for-unsuspecting-young-pretty-girl, and the people populating her castle follow all the trite expectations for a "yawn" ghost story.  But when the twist is finally revealed, it is so much more interesting.  Stretching credulity to the max, Alberta's ancestors reveal her unique bloodline, leaving her to make her choice. The entire premise of this novel is silly, but when silly comes wrapped in a moral dilemma so tied to real life, it leaves you rooting for compassion to take the lead.  Fast pacing and characters who slowly reveal that initial impressions can be untrustworthy give this story some punch.  From the author of Angelology, Ms. Trussoni proves again that she has the talent to make us look at "impossible" with an open eye.
