THE GIVER OF STARS, by Jojo Moyes

Literature -- 5 stars

Alice Wright lives a stultifying life in England, so after meeting and marrying Bennett Van Cleve, a mine owner in a small town in Kentucky, she expects her new life in America to be an improvement. Unfortunately, she didn't count on Bennett's daddy being part of the bargain.  When a new Eleanor Roosevelt visiting library comes to Kentucky looking for librarians to travel the rural mountains, Alice joins up eager for time not under the watchful eyes of the Van Cleves. ----- This is a story of well written, strong, interesting and diverse women determined to stand on their own worth in the male dominated world of the early 20th century.  Sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating, always interesting, their bond goes beyond the books and the mountain families they serve.  There is something of a Hallmark Movie of the Week feeling to the story with a predictable weak-triumphs-over-strong ending, but a few happy tears seem like the perfect antidote to the world I see outside my windows today.  An easy, relaxing, and satisfying read.

(Special thanks to my friend, M.W. for recommending this to me.  It was worth the wait.)
