PERFECT LITTLE CHILDREN, by Sophie Hannah
Mystery/Thriller -- 3 stars
Beth and Flora were best friends through college, as they both married, and each had a son and a daughter. But when Flora's husband became rich, the two woman drifted apart. Twelve years later, Beth finally caves to her curiosity about Flora's new life, and takes advantage of her son's soccer tournament to take a peek at Flora's "new" home where she sees and hears Flora calling Thomas and Emily to get out of the car. Thomas and Emily should be teenagers now, like her own kids; but the children Beth sees are toddlers, unchanged since the last time she saw them, twelve years ago. And doesn't Beth remember a third child? ----- A tantalizing mystery, that dies on the vine. Sorting through the lies and red herrings can only take you so far when none of the "reveals" actually come to much. Beth's perseverance finally pays off, but the ending is disappointing and pedestrian, especially when the original idea was so fresh.
