THE BOOK OF LONGINGS, by Sue Monk Kidd

Literature -- 5 stars

"I am Ana. I was the wife of Jesus ben Joseph of Nazareth." And so it begins.  Ms. Kidd creates a woman, intelligent, ambitious, rebellious, and determined, a woman raised in a home with ties to the ruler of Galilee who defies them all and chooses a life no one could have imagined. ----- Meticulously researched, this story focuses not on biblical miracles, but on the humanness of Jesus and a woman he could have loved. References to the familiar Jesus of the Bible are used to enhance the relationship between Ana and Jesus rather than as dramatic marks on a well known timeline. From a lesser author, this could have been pretentious, instead it is a story as natural as breathing with an understated ending made more impacting for that choice.
