FOUNDRYSIDE, by Robert Jackson Bennett

Fantasy -- 4 stars

Foundryside Trilogy - Book 1
Ancient magic has been industrialized in Tevanne, a city run by four sacrosanct Merchant Houses, each with its own walled city within a city.  In the empty space between them exists Foundryside, a place of poverty with no law and no rules.  That's where Sancia, an escapee from an outlying plantation and a master thief, lives.  Someone on that plantation implanted a device in Sancia's head that made Sancia special, and she takes on a job so dangerous it could pay her enough to find someone else to make her normal again.  ----- Completely original with complex and sympathetic characters, this is an imaginary world that blurs the edges dividing good and evil.  The technical aspects are sometimes repetitious, but never wholly boring.  The story is punctuated by action scenes reminiscent of R.A. Salvatore's The Forgotten Realms series that push the excitement button just when its needed. A tale that becomes more and more complex as it progresses.  Book 2 is on my library hold list.
