DEAD LAND, by Sara Paretsky

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

V.I. Warshawski - Book 20
Lydia Zamir survived a mass shooting at an outdoor concert. Her lover, a man with connections to South American politics, did not. Now she's living in the woods on Chicago's South side where the city's elite are pushing a beach development. Seemingly protected by a mysterious man known only as Coop and his big, black dog, Lydia disappears after a young man  is murdered there.  V.I. wants to find her to make sure she's safe.  But someone else is looking for her to shut her up. ----- Sara Paretsky often writes complicated, multi-faceted mysteries.  She has outdone herself with this one.  Working through the connections between a mentally and physically fragile singer, a questionable city development, a young man with roots in Pinochet's Chilean regime, and a dog loving environmentalist will test your patience.  Teetering on the edge of becoming too complicated, this story is ultimately a sad lesson on the perfidy of greed.
