SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, by Sheldon Siegel

Mystery/Thriller - 4 1/2 stars

Mike Daley/Rosie Fernandez - Book 1
Mike Daley is getting downsized from the biggest law firm in San Francisco, and preparing to set up a two-partner practice with his ex-wife when one of the big firm's partners is murdered on the eve of a huge financial closing.  The police arrest another partner who hires Mike to defend him, catapulting newly on-his-own Mike Daley into the big time.  Adding another element of intrigue is the new District Attorney, himself a former partner at the original law firm, who decides to try the case himself.  Let the legal games begin! ----- Lovers of legal thrillers, this book is for you.  Narrated by the Mike Daley character in an easy, breezy style that makes him instantly likable, he introduces a parade of interesting characters, both central and peripheral, while building the defense strategy.  But this author really shines when he gets to the trial itself.  Fully the last half of the book reads like a court transcript.  Thanks to Attorney Daley's mental asides, what could have been a dry slog, instead flies.  The conclusion, which seems like an epilogue, at first appears to come out of nowhere, but buried deep in the early pages is one tiny clue that makes everything fit.
