DEVOTED, by Dean Koontz
Mystery/Thriller -- 5 stars
A dying woman's dog and an eleven year-old mute, autistic boy living hundreds of miles apart share a connection. The dog knows the boy needs him, and he's on his way. Unfortunately, the sole survivor of failed genetic experimentation is determined to get there first, and aid is the furthest thing from his mind. Throw in the first woman's nurse, a former Navy SEAL, a crooked sheriff, a determined medical examiner, and a quartet of killers for hire; then settle in for one heck of a ride. ----- Dean Koontz may fail in character development, but he is a master of situational commotion. While the characters in his latest thriller are diverse, they can all be found in any catalog of stock characters. But there is so much going on, so many plots and sub-plots, all converging on one small boy and and one yellow dog that the lack of depth is wholly unimportant. This is a simple good vs. evil book, with a little bit of hopeful philosophy thrown in, a what-if book, an I-would-like-this-world book. A book that keeps the good guys good and the bad guys bad, and serves up a solution that would be ridiculous if it weren't so sincere, an ending so satisfying the only thing missing is the bow. If you're looking for intellectual stimulation, move on. If you want some fast action, pure escapism fun, enjoy.
