A DIVIDED LOYALTY, by Charles Todd
Mystery/Thriller - 4 stars
Inspector Ian Rutledge - Book 25
When Chief Inspector Brian Leslie is sent to the small village of Avebury to investigate the death of a young, unidentified woman, he leaves without a solution. Inspector Rutledge, having just solved a similar crime elsewhere, is sent to give the Avebury case a new pair of eyes. His search for the murderer takes him in an uncomfortable direction. ----- This book is like a geography lesson of England's Great West Way, home to Avebury Stone Circle. So much traveling! The abrupt location changes do result in a bit of choppiness; still, each stop is logical, each adding a piece to an increasingly complicated case. Logic and tenacity are the heartbeats of Ian Rutledge mysteries, and this one is no different. The suspect is slowly revealed, even as Mr. Rutledge tries to disbelieve where his investigation is leading him. Conjecture is fine, but where is the proof? For the most part, this series has been a good one; this is one of the best recent additions to the lexicon.
