BEYOND ALL REASONABLE DOUBT, by Malin Persson Giolito
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
When 15 year old Katrin is murdered, Stig Ahlin becomes the prime and only suspect. Now, thirteen years later, Sophia Weber's former law professor asks her to help free the man he has come to believe is innocent. ----- If you enjoy John Grisham legal thrillers, this Swedish author may be just your cup of tea. The two main characters are interesting if not entirely likable. Written in alternating chapters that follow the original case versus the fight to free the convicted killer, Ms. Giolito manages to keep the questions coming. There are some uncomfortable relationships between Sophia and a few supporting characters that sometimes diffuse the story arc without adding much to the story itself, but for the most part, the tension keeps building. And I mean, right to the end. Ms. Giolito manages to hold the truth tightly until the final pages, so much so that I began to wonder if this was one of those books that leaves the reader to decide. Never fear. The truth is told, and it comes from a source barely considered, but in the picture from from the beginning. A nice twist.
