THE SACRAMENT, by

Mystery/Thriller -- 3 stars

A young French nun is sent to Iceland to investigate a report of misconduct by a local Catholic priest.  During her visit, a young boy witnesses the priest fall from the church bell tower.  Years later, she is called back to Iceland when the boy, now an adult, who witnessed the tragedy writes a letter to the Vatican asking to see her in person. -----  This book started out like gangbusters.  Unfortunately, after the fast-paced opening, the story seemed to stall.  Chapter after chapter of the nun's uncomfortable relationship with church hierarchy and with families who didn't want to talk to her were a slog that offered nothing that moved the story forward.  It wasn't until the last few pages that long held secrets were revealed.  The ending was satisfying, but the bloated middle had already sucked much of its energy dry.
