SARAH JANE, by James Sallis

Literature -- 5 stars

How Sarah Jane Pullman's journey from her childhood on a chicken farm, to a court-ordered Army gig, through numerous kitchens, and countless towns, landed her as a small town cop is one best told in her own words. ----- And what words she has.  This is not a simple coming of age story; it is an analysis of being human.  One of those books that exists without any major plot points, it begs to be read for the imagery Sarah Jane brings to her own story.  It's a style teetering on the edge of sarcasm, a casual acceptance--never pretty--but so true to the human condition that it makes your teeth ache.  To Sarah Jane, life is what it is, and who among us can argue with that?
