NINTH HOUSE, by Leigh Bardugo
Mystery/Thriller, Ghost Story -- 4 stars
Alex Stern - Book 1
Galaxy Stern is not your average Yale freshman. Despite her unsavory past, she is recruited to the ninth of Yale's secret societies. Her job is to learn how to oversee and protect each of Yale's other eight secret societies' magic; but when her mentor disappears into an illegal portal, she is left with just a ghost, a house caretaker, and a skeptical detective to bring her mentor back and to solve the murder of a townie on Yale property. ----- How to review this book...whew. A little Night Circus, a touch of The Secret History, a flavoring of Dean Koontz--all stirred together to coalesce into a brew that is totally its own. Alex Stern is strong, determined, and way beyond her depth, but she refuses to give in until she knows the whole story. And what a story it is. Unexpected twists reveal long held secrets in a dark tale that doesn't fit neatly into any one genre. The set up of the societies is a bit long-winded and trying to get all the House "facts" into evidence is done a bit awkwardly though they are necessary to the plot. Yale's secret societies are real, even if their magic is born of the author's imagination. I think.
