THE NIGHT FIRE, by Michael Connelly

Mystery/Thriller -- 3 1/2 stars

Renee Ballard - Book 3
Once again, Detective Ballard partners with Harry Bosch to tackle a cold case.  John Jack Thompson was Harry's mentor when Harry first joined the LA police force. When John Jack dies, his wife gives Harry a murder book that her husband left in his office.  Harry shares the book with Night Watch detective Renee Ballard.  While the 20 year old, unsolved murder of a young man is interesting reading, they both question why John Jack kept it all this time but apparently never worked to solve it.  Reopening the case isn't going to be easy, but not-easy is what this pair does. -----  Harry's character has been well-developed in Mr. Connelly's Harry Bosch series.  Renee Ballard's is less defined.  Disappointingly, some of the idiosyncrasies that make her stand out from other female detectives are only touched on in this story.  Still, the pace flies and the clues are logical.  What is missing is the big ending Mr. Connelly usually puts out.  This time, after all the hunting and discovery fun, the ending seems rushed and somehow incomplete.
