THE QUAKER, by Liam McIlvanney
Mystery/Thriller -- 3 stars
It's 1969, winter in Glasgow, and a serial killer investigation has stalled. The killer hasn't struck in months, so it's possible he has moved on and out of Glasgow's jurisdiction. With that in mind, Duncan McCormick is sent in to figure out what went wrong with the original detectives' inquiries, and to shut down the investigation. No surprise that he finds himself an unpopular addition to the Glasgow murder squad. ----- Stock characters, stock situations, a totally expected turn around. The writing is solid, even interesting up to a point; it's just not very original.
