PARABLE OF THE SOWER, by Octavia E. Butler

Dystopian -- 3 stars

In a not too far in the future America, the only safe neighborhoods are those behind walls.  Schools are held in safe homes, shortages of everything from food to fuel to clothing are a way of life, and no one smart leaves their neighborhood alone.  Teen-aged Lauren lives with her family and pastor father behind a wall in Los Angeles.  Lauren is a thinker and an empath. She isn't sure she believes her father's preaching, but she can create a belief system of her own on which to cling.  When outsiders break into her family's compound and burn it to the ground, Lauren escapes alone.  Walking to Canada, she encounters refugees from other parts of California, and begins to sow her new religion: God is Change. ----- The scariest thing about this novel is that it begins in 2024.  The world created is complete, logical, and easily imagined.  The characters--the cynic, the good guy, the mother trying to safe her child, the sisters escaping an abusive father--are lightly drawn.  Lauren is a voice of hope that explains why they are all drawn to her, but she came off as too preachy for me.  This book was awarded multiple awards, but it left me cold.
