THE INSTITUTE, by Stephen King
Horror -- 4 1/2 stars
Luke is a 12 year old genius who can (sometimes) move a pizza pan--if it's empty and if it's not too big. One morning he wakes up in his room, at least it looks like his room except the window is missing. Out in the hallway, he finds, not his home, but a long hallway with a row of doors behind which are kids like him, kids with "special" talents. Welcome to the The Institute. This is a horror story where the monsters aren't fanged escapees from hell or ghosts of the long dead. Here the monster is our own government, and the gore is what is left when the powers that be are done with their young guests. When the instituted talent decides they're done being exploited, their hosts find out that government work isn't all it's cracked up to be. ----- The kids are varied personalities possessed of their own unique coping mechanisms that all ring true even if the bad guys are cookie cutter evil. Stephen King once again uses his considerable talent to create a taut story where anything can happen and a happy ending is not guaranteed. Enjoy the ride.
