THE WEE FREE MEN, by Terry Pratchett

Fantasy -- 4 1/2 stars

Discworld - Book 30 / Tiffany Aching - Book 1
First in a series of Discworld stories about a young Tiffany Aching.  Tiffany is nine years old.  Her jobs are to make the butter and cheese and to watch her baby brother.  What Tiffany really wants though is to be a witch.  She meets a real witch and seems to have passed the test to be sent to a school for training, but before she can pack, her brother disappears.  Tiffany is determined to find him.  A clan of tiny blue men become her companions in a race to save not only her brother, but the world from an evil queen who wants nothing more than to put everyone under her control. ----- A friend recommended a book in this series.  Finding a long wait list at the library, I decided to go to the beginning of the Tiffany Aching stories and read them first.  This one starts out in a style that echos a child's fairy tale, but it soon becomes apparent that this is a tale in the style of the Grimm Brothers where nothing is simple and darkness always lurks.  This is a story with heart, totally charming, original, imaginative, and incredibly funny.  The Wee Free Men and Tiffany Aching make one heck of a team.
