FALL FROM GRACE, by Tim Weaver

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

David Raker - Book 5
When Leonard Franks, a highly respected member of the Metropolitan Police, retires to the English countryside with his wife, Ellie, life is supposed to be idyllic.  Then he goes outside to bring some firewood in from the shed, and disappears.  The investigation stalls, and his daughter convinces David Raker, a missing persons expert, to help. What he uncovers is a shock to everyone. ----- I thoroughly enjoyed the seemingly unsolvable disappearance--Ellie went looking for him within minutes, the retirement cottage was surrounded by open land with no place to hide, there was no vehicle heard leaving the yard.  The slow and careful investigation was satisfying with clues dealt in a measured march, a reader's escape room.  As the truth is uncovered, you can't help but feel sorry for the family about to be devastated by the truth they fought to find. I've never encountered this author before and the book could easily have been a stand-alone, so no need to read the series in order, though I will be looking for more.
