THE KING OF BONES AND ASHES, by J.D. Horn

Fantasy -- 3 stars

Witches of New Orleans - Book 1
Magic is weakening in New Orleans, witches are disappearing, and the various covens are afraid.  Alice Marin, recently released from confinement on an isolated island, wonders if her family is responsible for the missing members.  At the same time, the young owner of a voodoo shop is finding out more about her late mother and her place in the world of witches.  And everyone seems to be interested in The Book of Unwinding, and it's place in their history, if only they could find it. ----- There are so many characters, and so many subplots and intrigues that the entire book seemed like one 350 page introduction.  The overlapping stories made it difficult to really be interested in any of them.  The final 75 pages or so began to bring the main story into focus, but I'll admit that by then I was no longer all that interested.  There are two more books in this trilogy, and I may read them.  Or I may not.
