DEFENDER, by Robert Crane
Fantasy -- 1 star
Sanctuary Series - Book 1
Cyrus Davidon is the leader of a 3-person guild. They are poor, with a guild hall in the slums of Reikonos. After one adventure, they are asked to join a large, successful guild known as Sanctuary. They accept, and then the adventuring really starts and Cyrus is soon marked as a leader. ----- This may be the worst fantasy book I have ever read. (Okay, I only skimmed the last third because it was that bad.) Anyone who is a fan of fantasy is familiar with the well trod pattern of working for the betterment of all creatures who live in their make believe world. This group of guilds is nothing but an organization of mercenaries, dedicated to pillaging other realms and strongholds for the booty they can bring back to the guild hall. Raid and raid after raid with no other point, no other adversary but those with something the guilds want for their own. The odd juxtaposition of colloquial English and slang in a world of fairies, gnomes, trolls, dwarfs, and magic is uncomfortable and jarring. The magic is underdeveloped, with no apparent downside which mutes any inherent tension. You die in a raid? You're alive again within seconds. This series goes on for nine more books. I sincerely hope they improve, though I have no intention of wasting my time finding that out.
