THE KEPT WOMAN, by Karin Slaughter

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

Will Trent - Book 8
Will Trent is married to Angie, a woman with whom he grew up in an orphanage.  Angie is trouble and troubled, and Will is looking for her so he can divorce her.   He is also sleeping with the Medical Examiner and truly in love for the first time.  Then evidence says the soon-to-be ex-wife appears to have been at a crime scene where a dirty cop died.  And that dirty cop just wriggled out of a rape case that Will had investigated.  Oh, and the crime scene is a mega-development that the city bigwigs are backing.  And that's just the first 50 pages. ----- While the relationship between Will and Angie has been a major factor in this entire series, this time, it gets in the way of the story, and not in a good way.  Too much time is spent on the Will/Angie question for a story as complicated as this one.  The tale of big money, dirty cops, and missing women is well-plotted with the usual mix of Karin Slaughter realistic and fallible characters painted with a wide brush of grey.  I just couldn't help but wish that Angie would either straighten up or go away and leave (mostly) good guy Will to get on with his life.
