THE DEMON OF MANSFELD MANOR, by S.A. Jacobs
Ghost Story -- 1 1/2 stars
Jim Bauer is just an average guy, living his unexciting life. Then he finds out he has inherited a huge, decaying mansion and that he is expected to bring it back to its former glory. Oh, and the mansion is bequeathed to him by his mother--who died 80 years before Jim Bauer was born. Enter the new girlfriend and the paranormal investigator. This book has all the elements that make for a good ghost story--antiquated curses, hidden rooms, ghostly demons, a fantastic mansion, eerie predictions--but it is so badly written that it just becomes a slog to get to the end, where you hope for some kind of satisfying denouement, but...no. Awkward and immature, I couldn't help but think this would be more at home in a Freshman composition course, where it would be returned with lots of red ink.
