SOMETHING IN THE WATER, by Catherine Steadman

Mystery/Thriller -- 2 stars

Erin and Mark are on their honeymoon when they find a duffel bag floating in the water.  Mark doesn't want to open it, but Erin does it anyway.  Mark doesn't want Erin to research the possible owner of the bag, but she does it anyway.  Then greed takes over and they decide to keep the bag.  At that point, the book becomes nothing more than Erin talking to herself as she does whatever she and Mark have just agreed they would not do.  The book opens with Erin digging a grave, so you know that nothing good will come of this, and maybe that's the problem.  Erin's edgy sense of humor is entertaining for a while, but mostly she is so unlikable that you begin to hope the grave she is digging is her own.  Even the ending, which contains a semi-surprise, is disappointing, leaving a chance for a sequel.  Definitely not interested.
