Rhyme and his crew are called in to investigate a triple homicide at a diamond cutter's store. Millions of dollars in uncut and finished diamonds were left behind, so what is the motive? Are a series of NYC earthquakes and fires part of the case or are they the fault of a geothermal excavation? All of Lincoln's high-tech forensics are brought into play, but the "wow" factor that gave his earlier Lincoln Rhyme books that page-turning edge is missing. This is a series that may be running out of steam.
