PAPER GHOSTS, by Julia Haeberlin

Mystery/Thriller -- 2 1/2 stars

A young woman has been searching for Carl Louis Feldman since she was 12 years old.  That's when her older sister disappeared without a trace.  When she finds the man she believes is responsible, he is suffering from dementia, but she decides to take him on a road trip in the hope that he'll tell her what happened all those years ago.  You know that moment in a horror movie when the power goes off and the heroine hears a noise in the basement/attic/closet so she lights a candle and goes to investigate instead of just walking out the front door like a sane person?  Well, this book is 348 pages of that moment.  The whole idea of inviting a man you think is a serial killer to travel across Texas with you--alone--is ridiculously outlandish.  You can't help but hope something horrible will happen just to relieve the tension.  Instead, there is an ending so anticlimactic that the only response can be "That's it?"  It's as though you spent hours listening to the theme from Jaws only to find out what you've been running from is a Sunfish lonely for human companionship.  If you enjoy that kind a torture, you'll love this book.  Just don't say I didn't warn you.
