THE MEMORY WATCHER, by Minka Kent
Mystery/Thriller -- 3 1/2 stars
Autumn Carpenter gave her infant daughter up for adoption years ago. She has been searching for her ever since. When she stumbles upon her daughter's new identity on-line, Autumn ghost watches her life with her perfect family. When the family's on-line life disappears, Autumn has to find another way to continue watching; and when she does, she finds out "perfect" is just a word. The comparisons between this book and The Girl on the Train are inevitable, and not unwarranted, though Autumn is more than a dreamer and an accidental witness like the narrator of that book. Here, Autumn's involvement is the result of carefully planned and executed deceit. The story is pretty good. Where the book suffers are the characters--all but one of them are unlikable. Whatever happens, you can't help but think, "Well, you had that coming." Still, if you enjoyed The Girl on the Train, you'll enjoy The Memory Watcher.
