THEN SHE WAS GONE, by Lisa Jewell
Mystery/Thriller -- 3 1/2 stars
Ellie Mack was 15 when she disappeared. Her parents have now divorced and her older siblings have moved on with their lives, so when Ellie's mother, Laurel, meets a charming man in a coffee shop, it looks like she is ready to move on too. Her family likes him and they're happy to see the relationship blossom. Even when they all meet his young daughter, Poppy--who bears a remarkable likeness to Ellie--no one seems to put the pieces together. This is where the book slides into the realm of ridiculous. By this point, the reader already knows Poppy's real identify, but we're supposed to believe that Laurel remains oblivious. The ending does include a bit of a twist that saves the book somewhat, but I spent much of my reading time wondering how anyone could be this unaware.
