THE MAZE AT WINDEMERE, by Gregory Blake Smith

Literature -- 3 stars

This is really five different stories that all take place in what is now the wealthy bastion of Newport, Rhode Island.  In periods from the 1600s up to modern day, each story focuses on a man attempting to woo a woman--and not all for good reasons.  Because there are so many stories with a similar theme, it is confusing in the beginning, though it becomes easier as the stories become more diverse.  Only two actually caught my interest, the modern day story and a tale set in the mid 1600s.  The others never really jelled for me.  This is another book I looked forward to but which, ultimately, turned out to be disappointing.  It's well written, with each section penned in a style that fit the period, but I found the majority of the characters unlikable--and likable characters trump style every day.
