SINCE WE FELL, by Dennis Lehane, narrated by Julia Whelan
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 1/2 stars
Audiobook Narration -- 5 stars
Book: Rachel Childs, a former reporter who suffered an on-air meltdown before losing her job as a rising TV journalist, now lives the life of a shut-in. In an attempt to help Rachel, her husband begins to set small goals to help her get out of the house and back into life. It seems to be working until one afternoon they take the subway, and Rachel finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy of deception that will take all the bravery she can muster to conquer. ----- Rachel Childs is a character with a conscience, someone to care about and to cheer for. Like all the Dennis Lehane mysteries I've read, once this story starts, it moves.
Narration: I'll admit to avoiding female readers because they so often employ gimmicks like squeaky or phony basso profundo voices for individual characters that end up being irritating. I'm glad I took a chance on Julia Whelan, a female reader I've never encountered before. Her reading is well-paced; and she portrays all her characters clearly and without the use of crutches.
