A NOISE DOWNSTAIRS, by Linwood Barclay

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

A year ago, Paul Davis followed a fellow professor who he thought was drunk and might need help.  Instead he witnessed his colleague attempting to dispose of two bodies, victims who were forced to type apologies to their murderer before they were killed.  When Mr. Davis' wife buys him an old Underwood at a yard sale, Paul starts to hear typing in the middle of the night (sounds his wife does not hear), and finding messages on the machine in the morning (messages his wife thinks he is typing in his sleep). Typewriters don't normally go bump in the night and he wants to get rid of it, but wonders if this could be the typewriter the police never found.  Well written, fast-paced, with enough suspects, twists and surprises to keep you turning pages.
