WARLIGHT, by Michael Ondaatje

Literature -- 5 stars

It is 1945, just after the end of WWII, when 14-year-old Nathaniel's parents move to a country half-way around the globe from their London home, leaving him and his sister in the care of a their boarder who may or may not be a criminal.  The boarder, whom they call The Moth, adds a cast of visitors, some long-termed, some fleetingly temporary into their lives.  It is a unique and confusing adjustment for both young people, but at the same time, the freedom from parental rules can be a great teacher.  And who were those people they called mother and father anyway?  Intelligent and elegant, this is a story where nothing and everything happens...simultaneously.  The resulting view into their lives is more intimate for all that.  A book, not to devour, but to savor.
