THE GHOST NOTEBOOKS, by Ben Dolnick

Ghost Story -- 5 stars

When Hannah Rampe takes a job as the live-in director at the Wright Historic House in upstate New York, she is joined by her finance Nick Beron, and together they move into a small apartment in the museum. At first, it's like real-life Masterpiece Theater, with the museum's board and patrons an added interest.  When the subject of the last director comes up, it is swept aside, as are rumors about the disappearance of the original home owner's wife.  When Hannah begins to have trouble sleeping, she tells Nick it's because she is adjusting to a change in her medications.  Then Hannah disappears and the museum is suddenly shuttered.   A sincerely grieving Nick is determined to get to the bottom of the house's stories; and, just as Hannah searched for Wright's notebooks, Nick begins to search for Hannah's. This is a ghost story where nothing ever goes bump in the night; but from the beginning there is a sense that, just beyond your hearing, is a low, ominous note that never stops building in intensity until the last page.  Who needs slamming doors or ethereal floating plasma when a gentle touch is capable of bringing shivers like these?
