THE CRUEL PRINCE, by Holly Black

Fantasy -- 4 1/2 stars

The Folk of the Air - Book 1
Jude's older sister, Vivi, was always different, take her eyes for instance. Then, when Jude is seven, her parents are murdered by a man who claims to be Vivi's father, and she, her twin and Vivi are swept up to live in the High Court of Faerie.  Six years later, Jude wishes she could be truly a faerie like Vivi.  When she is offered a chance to spy for the prince who will be next on the Faerie throne, she takes the offer, hoping to be named a knight, and finds herself at the center of a world of Faerie intrigue and betrayal that she never imagined. ----- Though I saw some of the twists coming before they happened, I didn't mind because I was so entranced by the world Ms. Black has created--one where every faerie is different (her descriptions are a phantasm of hair and fur and shape and color ), and where humans and faeries cross between the real and fey worlds and live in both.  This is a book recommended for young adults--but then so was Harry Potter.  Book 1 is a compete story, no cliffhanger to make you feel cheated; but there is a second book coming that won't be published until January.  It's already on my wish list.
