THE THIRD VICTIM, by Phillip Margolin
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
A woman, battered and bloody, stumbles onto a dark country road. She identifies the house where she was held, and evidence links the owner, a prominent local attorney, to two previous murders. Regina Barrister, the city's foremost defense attorney takes on the case with the assistance of newly hired Robin Lockwood. When the case looks like a conviction is inevitable, Robin begins to wonder if Regina is ill or simply losing her touch. I've read a couple of Phillip Margolin's books. He has a detached style that can be off-putting; but his fast-paced storytelling makes for a quick, entertaining, if not too deep, read. There are some twists and turns, and though I figured out the ending way too soon, I enjoyed the ride.
