THE THEORY OF DEATH, by Faye Kellerman

Mystery/Thriller -- 2 1/2 stars

Decker and Lazarus Series - #23
The nude body of a young math genius is found in the woods.  It looks like a suicide, but there is no note.  The investigation leads the detectives to Kneeds Loft College and its graduate math program where it seems no one really likes anyone else, but everyone is interested in seeing the papers the dead student had hidden behind a drawer of his desk.  I haven't read a Faye Kellerman book in a while and had forgotten her style of lots and lots of dialogue set off with minimal narrative.  It makes for a choppy read and the subject matter makes it even choppier.  I was always good at math, but I'll admit to being confused and ultimately disinterested in all the extended and repetitious talk/explanations about obtuse mathematical theories and formulas that I guess were supposed to be atmospheric, but were really just annoying.   The mystery itself was ultimately buried under a barrage of numbers that, in the end, were only minimally important to the story.

  1. Accurate take on her writing. Too much information buries the story.
