THE OUTSIDER, by Stephen King
Horror --- 3 stars
An eleven-year-old boy's violated body is left in a town park. There is rock solid forensic evidence that indicates the perpetrator is the town's favorite Little League coach, and the town's police department move to make a very public arrest. Then the coach gives them rock solid evidence that proves he was not even in town when the crime was committed. When family members begin to pay the price for the contradicting stories, some of the detectives begin to wonder what is real. For a Stephen King book, this one just doesn't measure up. It starts out as a typical police procedural with the horror aspect taking way too long to develop. And even then, there is more talk than action with a slogging build to the final confrontation which ends up being dissatisfying. Yes, the "bad guy" is horrible, but the creepy/spookiness that is King's horror book trademark is totally missing.
