FRACTURED, by Karin Slaughter, narrated by Phil Gigante

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
Audiobook Narration -- 3 stars

Will Trent Series - Book 2
Book: In an upscale Atlanta neighborhood, a teenage girl has been brutally murdered in the hallway outside her professionally decorated bedroom.  When Will Trent is sent to investigate, he sees what the local police have missed, and it's a game-changer. -----  I've read or listened to most of Karin Slaughter's books including the Will Trent series and have been satisfied with all of them.  It's not necessary to read them in order to enjoy them.  This one is a bit over the top in the soul searching department, touching the edges of maudlin.  It may be partly the fault of the narration, but there are sections that seem to bog down in unnecessary self analysis while doing nothing to move the story forward.  Excepting those sections, this is a really good story.

Narration:  Phil Gigante is not one of my favorite readers.  He has a speech pattern that grates after a while.  With dialogue he is a natural--varied, expressive, clean.  The descriptive passages between the dialogue is where he fails, sometimes miserably.  He has a habit of ending each descriptive sentence on a down note that makes everything seem like a tragedy.  Something as mundane as reaching for a paper towel becomes so sad you want to scream, "No, don't do it!"  If this story appeals to you, I'd recommend reading it over the audiobook version.
