A COLUMN OF FIRE, by Ken Follett

Historical Fiction -- 5 stars

Kingsbridge Series -- Book 3
Ken Follett returns to Great Britain and the town of Kingsbridge, home of the great cathedral.  This book covers the period of Queen Elizabeth's reign and the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots.  Unlike most books of this period, the animosity between the two queens is really background in the battle for supremacy between Catholics and Protestants in England, Spain, and France.  An epic story with great characters woven into the history of the period including the great sea battles when England's nascent navy goes against the sea power of Spain.  These are people you can love and hate, people to hope for, and people whose demise you anticipate with relish.  The book is long and made longer by an unnecessary epilogue, but that's a minor fault.  Though the three books in the series are each a complete story and reading them in order is not necessary, I would recommend starting with The Pillars of the Earth (Book 1) which focuses on the building of the cathedral that is so central to the subsequent books.
