SAINTS FOR ALL OCCASIONS, by J. Courtney Sullivan

Literature -- 3 1/2 stars

Two young sisters leave Ireland for the U.S.--one resigned to marry a man she doesn't love, the other looking forward to an adventure.  The adventure turns into an unwanted pregnancy and the marriage turns into a way to hide it.  A story that covers three generations of Irish immigrants that should have been enveloping as family sagas are meant to be; but what I found was a family more disconnected by conflict than joined together through real love.   In the end, I found the book to be so sad that it was a relief to be finished.
